How to save a stroke victim’s life

A stroke is almost like a ‘brain attack’, it happens when a certain part of the brain is starved of the vital blood supply it needs to function. This can cause cells to be damaged and die. When this happens the effects are instant and are both external and internal.

A stroke can affect different people in different ways however; in most cases it will damage the mind and body. Depending on the part of the brain that is affected, the severity of a stroke can vary from full recovery in a month to death.

Knowing how to spot the signs of a stroke can help a victim get the medical help they need, as quickly as possible. You may have seen a few adverts on television in recent years, using the acronym F.A.S.T, as not only do you need to act immediately but you need to notice the signs that each letter stands for:

F- Face

Check the victims face for drooping. Usually it will fall to one side and the victim will find it difficult to smile like they usually would.

A-Arms

The arms, like every limb on the body, are driven by the brain telling them what to do. If the victim struggles to lift both arms and keep them there, this is a sign of a stroke.

S-Speech

Ask the victim to try and explain what is happening, if their speech is slurred somewhat it means that their brain is not sending the messages needed to speak normally.

T-Time

If you feel the victim is suffering from all the signals of a stroke then you should call to 999 immediately as Time is of the essence here. The sooner medical assistance is given the more likely the victim is to recover.

It’s worth remembering that a stroke is an instant affliction and can happen to anyone at anytime, no matter what their age or health is. So should you notice any of the signs listed above, it’s best to call for an ambulance as fast as you can so the victim can be checked.

Always try to stay as calm as possible in the event of a medical emergency as no matter how conscious the patient is, we want them to be as stress free as possible to prevent their affliction from worsening.
